The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad is located in Bryson City, North Carolina and is a freight and heritage railroad with depot. Their branch line operates over the western leg of the Murphy Branch which was formerly known as the Southern Railway. This route includes passing through fertile valleys, through a tunnel while traveling across river gorges of the Great Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina.
This railroad offers a variety of excursions that celebrates famous events like Railfest, Pumpkin Express, the ever popular Day Out with Thomas, Lone Ranger, and the Polar Express. One of the favorite excursions is the Thomas the Tank ride which is approximately 25 minutes long followed by other activities like story telling, games, pictures with Sir Topham Hat and more.
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad has a claim to fame relative to Hollywood. The famous train wreck scene in the movie The Fugitive starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones was filmed along the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad. Two other movies filmed here as well including My Fellow Americans starring Jack Lemmon and James Garner and the film Forces of Nature starring Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock.
